A Haunting Truth

Not Good Enough

...or is it? Happy, I mean...


I had a realization of a haunting truth the other day.

One I think you might also have whispering in your ear and haunting you.

It's not good enough.

For the longest time I thought that this message was that I wasn't good enough, but that isn't what it was...

It was that my commitment was not good enough to create the change I wanted for me.


I realized this the other night when I was having one of *those* conversations in my head with a person that had treated me poorly.

...In my mind I was delivering a potent, mic-dropping truth (that we've all heard before):


THE BEST APOLOGY IS CHANGED BEHAVIOR.


I "said" this while I ate another handful of almonds.

...and I realized, I haven't changed my behavior.


I keep saying "I'm sorry" to myself and my body.

I keep feeling bad about what I'm eating—how much and how hurriedly and compulsively I do it— but I was still doing it.

Feeling bad about it isn't changing anything.

...it's actually just making me feel worse and pushing me into this very coping strategy...moving me to do it MORE.

If I really mean that I'm sorry, that I love myself, that I am honoring my body and my boundaries, I have to change my behavior.

So yesterday I made a big commitment—I threw away all the almonds (for those of you who don't know I often tell people "if you are what you eat, I'm nuts" because I eat a lot of nuts AND I hate wasting food...so this was/is a big deal).


But this time it is in the spirit of love, of commitment to me and my future, of giving my body some time to heal, of removing a coping mechanism so that I can become aware of what it is I am resisting and needing coping for/from.

This isn't easy, but it's necessary and I know from doing it in other areas, that it's always worth it.
